Active travel project of the year
This award recognises a new build or major refurbishment of a UK bridge used by pedestrians, as part of a cycle route or as a bridleway in the last 24 months.
Entries are welcome from anyone involved in the project – architect, consultant, contractor or client and collaborative entries from the project team are encouraged.
Rail bridge project of the year
This award seeks to recognise excellence in new build or major refurbishment rail bridge projects in the UK, over the last 24 months.
Entries are welcome from anyone involved in the project – architect, consultant, contractor or client and collaborative entries from the project team are encouraged.
Road bridge project of the year
This category is open to any new build or major road refurbishment project in the UK, in the last 24 months.
Entries are welcome from anyone involved in the project – architect, consultant, contractor or client and collaborative entries from the project team are encouraged.
Historic bridge project of the year
This category is open to any historic bridge project. Historic bridges being classified as those aged 50 years or over and listed on (or be eligible for listing) on the National Register of Historic Places .
Entries are welcome from anyone involved in the project – architect, consultant, contractor or client and collaborative entries from the project team are encouraged.
Projects entered into this category should focus on an upgrade or overhaul of a historic bridge in the UK to preserve it and keep it in use.
Bridge inspection project of the year
This category is open to any type of bridge or series of bridges that have been subject to a major inspection using new or innovative techniques that ensure the integrity of the structure.
Bridge management project of the year
Entries to this category should focus on long term management of any bridge structure and could include use of sensors and AI to predict performance that guides inspection work or helps plan maintenance or a major overhaul.
This award seeks to recognise how the bridge is maintained through its whole life with a focus on maximising use and minimising closures.
International bridge project of the year
This award seeks to recognise excellence from any new build or major refurbishment project, anywhere outside of the UK.
The category is open to any bridges used for road, rail or active travel.
Entries are welcome from anyone involved in the project – architect, consultant, contractor or client and collaborative entries from the project team are encouraged.
Innovation
Innovation in carbon reduction
This category seeks to recognise excellence in initiatives, design tools, maintenance techniques or solutions that have helped reduce the embodied carbon in new build or refurbishment projects and/or delivered lower whole life carbon costs in the UK or internationally.
The entries presented here must have been applied on a bridge or series of bridges during the last 24 months with one project used as a case study to demonstrate the benefits the idea has delivered.
Innovation in bridge inspection
This category seeks to recognise excellence in equipment, sensors, digital tools and solutions that have helped clients gain a better understanding of bridge condition and rate of degradation in the UK or internationally.
These solutions could also focus on reducing health and safety risks or reducing the need for closures to allow inspections to take place.
The entries presented here must have been applied on a bridge or series of bridges during the last 24 months with one project used as a case study to demonstrate the benefits the idea has delivered.
Best new bridge concept design
This category is open to projects anywhere in the world that are at the design stage and do not yet have to have secured funding for delivery or have a completion date.
Entries to this category should also demonstrate how buildability, carbon costs and whole life costs have been considered at the design stage, along with details of any innovative materials or construction techniques planned to be used during the construction.
Innovation in climate resilience
This category is open to adaptation of an existing bridge or demonstration of how climate change has been considered on a new bridge from the outset to ensure the structure remains fit for purpose throughout its design life.
Entries could include scour protections, monitoring to manage increased flood flows, improved drainage of the bridge structure itself or new and improved abutment designs to reduce the risk of flood erosion.

Bridge contractor of the year
This category seeks to recognise the best contractors – main contractors or specialists - involved in delivering the construction element of new build bridge projects or who carry out major refurbishment schemes on bridges.
The entry should refer to developments within the firm and on projects within the last 24 months and highlight the success and impact they are having.
Bridge maintenance contractor of the year
This category seeks to recognise the best specialist contractors who undertake regular maintenance work on any bridge structure.
The entry should refer to developments within the firm and on projects within the last 24 months and highlight the success and impact they are having.
Bridge consultant of the year
This category seeks to reward the best bridge engineering consultants. Open to those delivering the structural design element of new build bridge projects or who carry out major refurbishment schemes on bridges.
The entry should refer to developments within the firm and on projects within the last 24 months and highlight the success and impact they are having.
Bridge architect of the year
This award seeks to recognise excellence from bridge architects. Open to those delivering the architectural design element of new build bridge projects or who carry out major refurbishment schemes on bridges.
The entry should refer to developments within the firm and on projects within the last 24 months and highlight the success and impact they are having.
Bridge project team of the year
This category is open to teams working collaboratively on any type of bridge project, bridge maintenance or bridge management, who can demonstrate excellent culture and collaboration on projects within the last 24 months.
Entries should demonstrate excellent on-site or project team collaboration, leadership and a culture of collaboration that has benefitted the delivery of the work.
Bridge engineer rising star
This category seeks to reward any civil or structural engineer working for a client, contractor or consultant on bridge structures with 10 years or less post graduate experience.
Entrants should be able to demonstrate how they have excelled in their work, demonstrated industry-leading potential and have made efforts to improve knowledge in the sector.
Entrants will be judged on all round ability – not only academic and work-related achievements – but also their enthusiasm for the industry and their ambition.
Entries should be submitted by either the nominee or their employer and should include a commendation from a senior leader within their organisation.
Outstanding contribution to the industry
Nominations for this award are sought to find the individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry over the past 24 months.
Judges will focus on the personal contribution made by the individual, who can be involved in any area of the bridge industry from project planning to design, construction or maintenance and at any stage of their career.
This is not a lifetime achievement award and judges will be looking for an individual who has made their significant contribution in the last 24 months.
