Sajjad is a Chartered Civil Engineer with a career spanning 33 years in the Transportation Infrastructure sector. He has held several leadership roles and is currently the Rail Sector Director at Pell Frischmann. Sajjad is an advocate for doing things differently and challenging the norm through his methodical approach to solving problems. Sajjad's first ever project was to design the steel reinforcement for the Salford Crescent Bridge in Greater Manchester, setting a solid foundation for his career. His passion and determination unlocked several opportunities such as High-Speed Phase 2 hybrid Bill, Northen Hub and Wessex Capacity Alliance. 

Cameron is an Associate with COWI’s bridge team in London and the Carbon Management Lead for their International business line. He has over 10 years’ experience in design, assessment and delivery of bridges and transport infrastructure internationally and is passionate about solutions that minimise material use, and construction effort, whilst maximising value.

Andrew is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil engineers, and has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry with the majority in bridge engineering. This has included time spent working as a client in local government, as well as in the private sector for a main contractor and as a consultant. He joined Humber Bridge as head of infrastructure in 2017 and was appointed chief operating officer in February 2020, where he is responsible for the strategic delivery, operation and maintenance of the bridge and highway infrastructure assets.

Martin Byrne is a Civil Engineer and joined London Underground in 2001. Having spent the majority of his career in the railway industry he understands the challenges for today’s bridge maintainers as they modernise and innovate established asset management practices and strategies, particularly for safety of maintenance workers. Martin’s team is responsible for the maintenance and strategic business planning for all activities for over 70,000 civil assets across the London Underground network.

Kris Campbell is the Head of the Highways Structures Unit in the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland. He has a strong interest in bridges and the effective management of historic and aging infrastructure, also undertaking the role as the Departments Heritage Officer. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer with the ICE and is an active Supervising Civil Engineer and Training Scheme Administrator for the ICE. A Chartered Manager with the CMI, he is also undertaking a part-time PhD research project into the development of a novel bridge scour sensor.”

I am an expert in steel construction educated to PhD level with over 25 years of experience, in Portugal, The Netherlands, and the UK. I am a competent structural engineer and academic, with excellent communication, organization, and co-ordination skills. I have a comprehensive knowledge of analysing, designing and executing steel structures. Currently Director of Engineering at the BCSA, I am responsible for setting the technical direction of the Association, participate in the development of the steel design and fabrication standards. I sit in a number of technical committees (UK and European), and develop practical design and fabrication guides.

My career has been evenly split between bridge design, and bridge remediation and I have worked for most of the major consultants in the UK. My research interests are concrete repair and bridge maintenance systems. I take a keen interest in long span bridges with Amey. In my current role with Amey Consulting, I am responsible for staff across all our practices that offer consulting services for Clients across Highways and Aviation.

Donya is a Chartered Engineer and Director of Employability at the University of Surrey, with over a decade’s experience in structural and bridge engineering, specialised in building direct and indirect damage identification and structural health monitoring systems, resilience, risk, reliability (3R) assessment of transport infrastructure, infrastructure interdependency assessment and building performance-based digital twins. Her recent work on a scaled and practice-based feasibility study for an indirect damage detection system received 2022 DfT's Chief Scientific Advisor's 'Innovative Solution'. Donya has contributed to diverse projects, from implementing virtual real-time load and load effect monitoring concepts to developing service life assessment tools for road and rail bridges across Europe.

Fred Hartley is the principal highway structures engineer for the Canal & River Trust. He is responsible for the strategic asset management of the Trust’s 2970 bridges which have an estimated average age of 160 years. He has 38 years’ experience gained in the public, private and charitable sectors. Fred is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is also a member of the Reservoir Supervising Engineers Panel. Bridge inspections are vital tool in the kit that helps Fred and the Trust manage historic structures efficiently and safely for 21st Century use.

Hamish Harvey specialises in masonry bridges and arching structures. He delights in developing and applying new tools for the care of old structures, not for the shiny tech, but for the insight they can provide. Hamish develops and supports the Archie-M software for masonry bridge assessment.

Caroline Haycock is a team leader for Kier Transportation and is responsible for bridges and highway structures within the Highway Services Contracts for North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire Councils. She has over 30 years’ experience in the industry, predominantly in bridge maintenance. Caroline started as an office junior in a small consulting engineering practice, before moving to Northamptonshire County Council, working on a variety of refurbishment projects, and gaining Incorporated Engineer status. She then spent 16 years working on Motorway and Trunk Roads contracts, initially in Area 11 then Area 7, before moving back to Local Authority works in Northamptonshire, with its varied highway structures.

Jason is a chartered civil engineer and chartered environmentalist, responsible for leading the team charged with management of the stock of over 4,000 highway structures (bridges, retaining walls, culverts etc.) and more than 15,000 earthworks on the Welsh Government’s Strategic Road Network. Jason’s role includes leading on the Technical Approval process and development of standards and procedures guidance in accordance with the Wales Transport Strategy. Jason represents Welsh Government on the Bridge Owners Forum and UK Bridges Board.

Robert is the Bridges Manager at Leeds City Council with over 20 years of local government experience in the highways sector. Robert led the Regent Street Flyover project from inception to construction, acting as NEC Project Manager and clients representative.

Ahmad is a Principal Design Engineer at Network Rail. He was the lead designer of Network Rail’s R&D funded Flow Bridge, an innovative lightweight low-cost FRP footbridge solution which won 9 awards. A Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, he has over 23 years’ experience of bridge and structures design. His main area of expertise is Bridges, Advanced Finite Element Analysis of Structures, Jetty Structures and Highway Structures Design. Some of the notable projects he has worked on include the Network Rail’s Flow Bridge where he was the Lead Designer, Greater Bargoed Regeneration Scheme, Hinkley Point C Aggregate Jetty Bridge and JC Decaux, the Torch Display Tower in London. At Network Rail, Ahmad is one of the lead designers in Network Rail responsible for reviewing designs nationally from feasibility to detailed design to improve efficiencies, constructability, and innovation. He is currently working on a new modular FRP Footbridge Design based in the design principles for Flow Bridge to cater for accessibility for all to be utilised in Station and non-station environments.

Peter Kemm is a Senior Associate Director with Jacobs, having over 30 years of experience with all aspects of bridges and other highway structures. Peter specialises in design management and construction support, with expertise in Smart Motorway structures and maintenance of existing structures. He is particularly keen to ensure structures have been designed with ease of construction and maintenance in mind.

Andrew works at the cutting edge of infrastructure delivery. He has led National Highways’ approach to the decarbonisation of the Lower Thames Crossing. He has made it a pathfinder project for low carbon construction, demonstrating that with the right leadership and the right partners, it is possible to achieve deep decarbonisation of infrastructure construction today. Andrew has twenty years’ experience in delivering capital investment in infrastructure in both the public and private sector. He has held senior leadership roles in multi-£bn transport programmes and has supported both project and business leaders as an advisor. 

Effie is a Technical Director at Amey and an internationally recognised scour expert. She is a Chartered Engineer, member of the ICE and the IET, she is currently undertaking PhD Research on scour at the University of Glasgow and she is a member of the WES Climate Emergency Group. Effie is leading scour related projects UK-wide and is developing innovative scour monitoring and prediction tools and methods that help safeguard infrastructure at risk, the travelling public and the environment. Her work on scour has received various awards, it has been published internationally, and she has also been a member of Construction Industry Research and Information Association’s steering committee for the new manual on scour.

Dr Sas Majlessi is Director of Transport Infrastructure at Pell Frischmann London, promoting a variety of bridge and civil engineering projects within the road and rail environment. He was previously Director of Civil Infrastructure at Ramboll London. Sas has over 30 years of extensive experience in engineering consultancy and delivery of bridge and civil engineering schemes including planning, design, assessment, construction, maintenance and asset management. Focusing on various projects for Transport for London, National Highways, Network Rail, London Underground, Local Government and private organizations. He has profound understanding and knowledge of the engineering processes, value engineering, buildability, finance, whole life costing, health and safety, and carbon reduction/ environmental sustainability. 

Dr Hazel A McDonald BEng (Hons), PhD, CEng, FICE Chief Bridge Engineer (Head of Structures), Transport Scotland Educated at Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities, Hazel has been immersed in maintenance, renewal and asset management of Highway structures for over 30 years, nearly 20 years of this with Transport Scotland. Previous experience with Cumbria County Council and Capita Symonds in inspection, design and maintenance followed a PhD in ‘Temperature Effects in Concrete Box Girder Bridges’ and bridge design, inspection and assessment for Mott MacDonald. In Transport Scotland, Hazel leads a team of 17 staff managing the inspection, maintenance and improvement of Scottish Trunk Road structures. Hazel is a Fellow of the ICE and the current Chair of the UK Bridges Board.

Catherine is Founding Director of Useful Studio, an architectural practice with expertise in circular design for bridges, public realm, and buildings. She is currently working with National Highways having won the recent gantry competition, where the team aim to significantly reduce carbon and cost with an elegant, lean solution. She is also leading on low carbon retrofit schemes for heritage commercial and education assets. Catherine is active in education, lecturing and serving as an External Examiner for the University of Westminster. Useful Studio is a B Corp and Social Enterprise operating as a business for good, driving the ESG agenda in operations and delivery.

Helen is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Construction Manager and the incoming ADEPT National Bridges Group Chair. Helen works as the Structures and Tunnels Asset Manager for Kent County Council Highways and Transportation Directorate, leading multiple engineering teams delivering projects across the County's 2000+ structures, tunnels, special geotechnical measures and vehicle restraint systems. Helen is passionate about encouraging the future of our industry through her work as an ICE mentor and STEM Ambassador. In 2024 Helen was awarded the Women’s Engineering Society Top 50 Women in Engineering WE50 Award and the Chartered Institute of Building’s Motivational Leader of the Year Award. 

Joanne Saunders is a Chartered Civil Engineer with Ringway for thirteen years. She has led the Structures Team on the IOW Highways PFI contract, focusing on BCI improvements, strengthening, and parapet upgrades. As an ICE President’s Apprentice in 2014/15, she later became Innovation Manager at Eurovia, co-authoring a paper on bridge management and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In 2023, Jo was promoted to Business Manager for the IOW Highways PFI contract, overseeing highway improvement services, including managing a major landslip on the Isle of Wight.
