professional head structures, , Connect Plus Services, M25 DBFO
Tony Nicholls is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers with over 25 years’ experience in the design, construction and maintenance of both bridge and highways projects. During his career he has had to deal with several issues impacting serviceability of bridges as a result of ageing and deteriorating structures as well as significant damage following major incidents. He is currently the Professional Head Structures for Connect Plus Services who are the Operations and Maintenance company for the M25 DBFO Contract. As part of his role he has responsibility for the management of over 2500 highway structures on the M25 project network. Structures range from the QEII Bridge Crossing at Dartford, 5 tunnels and other large strategic structures, to smaller bridges all of which are critical to the continued availability of the M25 motorway. A significant part of his role is the development of the overall strategy and 30-year asset management forward plan to return the structures in a ‘no-worse condition’ at the end of the DBFO contract under the demanding restriction of keeping all lanes of the M25 available apart from a short 7 hour period at night.
