This category is open to any historic bridge project. Historic bridges being classified as those aged 50 years or over and listed on (or be eligible for listing) on the National Register of Historic Places.

Projects entered into this category should focus on an upgrade or overhaul of a historic bridge in the UK to preserve it and keep it in use.

  • How the work was planned and executed to preserve the historic structure
  • Any innovative techniques and solutions developed to deliver the work
  • Efforts made to ensure the structure remains operable for the long term
  • Any new technology incorporated into the structure without compromising the historic structure to ensure the bridge remains in service and minimises future maintenance

This category is open to any type of bridge or series of bridges that have been subject to a major inspection using new or innovative techniques that ensure the integrity of the structure.

Judges will be looking for evidence of:

  • How rate of degradation is determined
  • How health and safety risks to those undertaking the work has been minimised
  • Innovation that has helped minimise disruption for users of the structure

Entries to this category should focus on long term management of any bridge structure and could include use of sensors and AI to predict performance that guides inspection work or helps plan maintenance or a major overhaul.

This award seeks to recognise how the bridge is maintained through its whole life with a focus on maximising use and minimising closures.

Innovation 

This category seeks to recognise excellence in initiatives, design tools, maintenance techniques or solutions that have helped reduce the embodied carbon in new build or refurbishment projects and/or delivered lower whole life carbon costs in the UK or internationally.

The entries presented here must have been applied on a bridge or series of bridges during the last 18 months with one project used as a case study to demonstrate the benefits the idea has delivered.

Judges will be looking for evidence of:

  • Data demonstrating a quantifiable reduction in carbon compared to baseline
  • Evidence of new tools, techniques or solutions used which are advancements on conventional approaches
  • The research, development and strategy that led to the innovation

This category seeks to recognise excellence in equipment, sensors, digital tools and solutions that have helped clients gain a better understanding of bridge condition and rate of degradation in the UK or internationally.

These solutions could also focus on reducing health and safety risks or reducing the need for closures to allow inspections to take place.

The entries presented here must have been applied on a bridge or series of bridges during the last 18 months with one project used as a case study to demonstrate the benefits the idea has delivered.

This category is open to projects anywhere in the world that are at the design stage and do not yet have to have secured funding for delivery or have a completion date.

Entries to this category should also demonstrate how buildability, carbon costs and whole life costs have been considered at the design stage, along with details of any innovative materials or construction techniques planned to be used during the construction.

  • Design concepts that show an understanding of the setting the bridge will be built in

This category is open to adaptation of an existing bridge or demonstration of how climate change has been considered on a new bridge from the outset to ensure the structure remains fit for purpose throughout its design life.

Entries could include scour protections, monitoring to manage increased flood flows, improved drainage of the bridge structure itself or new and improved abutment designs to reduce the risk of flood erosion.

This category seeks to recognise the best contractors – main contractors or specialists - involved in delivering the construction element of new build bridge projects or who carry out major refurbishment schemes on bridges.

  • How innovation and collaboration was fostered within the teams
  • Evidence of learning from projects being applied elsewhere in the business
  • Close working with and support for the entire supply chain
  • Any other stand-out performance that particularly merits this award

This category seeks to reward any civil or structural engineer working for a client, contractor or consultant on bridge structures with 10 years or less post graduate experience.

Entrants should be able to demonstrate how they have excelled in their work, demonstrated industry-leading potential and have made efforts to improve knowledge in the sector.

Entrants will be judged on all round ability – not only academic and work-related achievements – but also their enthusiasm for the industry and their ambition.

Entries should be submitted by either the nominee or their employer and should include a commendation from a senior leader within their organisation.

  • Leadership with illustrative examples

  • An outline of the project currently being worked on, the technical challenges, along with how the nominee is contributing to solving these
  • Helping others, in career and/or social terms
  • Career satisfaction – what have been the best experiences and highlights to date
  • Ambitions, (career or for the industry) and the practical steps being taken to achieve these
  • A stand-out performance that particularly merits this award

Nominations for this award are sought to find the individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry over the past 18 months.

Judges will focus on the personal contribution made by the individual, who can be involved in any area of the bridge industry from project planning to design, construction or maintenance and at any stage of their career.

This is not a lifetime achievement award and judges will be looking for an individual who has made their significant contribution in the last 18 months.
